Compass Drawings

In this graphic assignment students created bold designs with quadrilateral symmetry. After finding the center of the page with a ruler 8th graders used compass’ to construct a framework for coloring. Students were introduced Prismacolor Pencils, an artist quality color pencil that is so rich and bright they are a real pleasure to work with.

This was a memorable project from my middle school art experience and I have been looking forward to sharing it. Unlike other projects this takes a practical and methodical approach to design, eliminating the pressure of representation or difficult materials. I love the way these pieces turned out and, as I had hoped, the students loved working on them, most created more than one.
