Portrait of Igor Stravinsky

This is  one of my favorite introduction exercises…

In this assignment students reproduce Pablo Picasso’s Portrait of Igor Stravinsky, a lesson from Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain.  To make the shift to Right Brain students turn the image upside down and try to draw it,  from this perspective the figure is simplified into shapes and curves. Students really seem to enjoy the challenge and are always amused when they get to turn their drawings right side up and see their funny looking portraits.
